A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

In assembly last week we talked about how the saying mauri mahi mauri ora is so important this term. Term 3 is the term of work in order to get the treats at the end of the year. For seniors, it’s about taking their derived grade exams seriously so they are well-prepared for the end-of-the-year externals. And for those with less exam pressure, it is the term to ensure they have the credits in the area they need in order to move forward with whatever their plans are next year. With only 9 weeks of the senior school year left it’s time to really consolidate their work and be making sound plans for what comes next -whether it be work, future study or returning for another year of school. Within this they need to consider whether they have the right credits to take certain subjects they may want – most Level 2 and 3 courses have prerequisites, so I really encourage those seniors to behaving conversations now so there is no disappointment next year if they cannot do what they want to. Our middle school and juniors are not exempt from the hard work either – this term really consolidates their work and puts students in the frame for awards at prize giving, or sets them up for making good option choices for the next year. It is also never too early to be developing those good study habits so that once they do hit the crunch years from Year 11 they are well prepared for facing the assessments. Once we have the senior course books ready there will be option information evenings – Level 1 will look significantly different next year and we are still working through the best way to approach the new Literacy and Numeracy requirements. Although these evenings are designed for those going into the senior year levels any parent is welcome to come along especially if they would like to start finding out how the senior courses are structured and operate.

Our annual fundraiser is on 21st October 2023. Entries are open via the website www.kaikouramountainstosea.com – we would love to see some student and whānau teams take on 10km each on our marathon route, or give the 5km a go! Everyone wins a medal & some awesome spot prizes up for grabs this year. Don’t miss out!

FRIENDLY REMINDERS

Prize Giving is approaching so if your child was the recipient of atrophy/taonga last year, we kindly ask that they are now returned to us so that we may prepare them for the 2023 recipient.

We do have security cameras around the school in various areas!

Sports Congratulations
Congratulations to the following students who were awarded spots on their representative squad for their respective sport and age group this fortnight:
Hockey Marlborough U13s – Isla Heger and Robin Reid
Hockey Marlborough U15’s – Adelaide Pettiti, Lauren Milne, Annalise Harris, Taylor Hegerand Logan Fissenden.

Netball
Our senior netball team headed up to Nelson for the Supernet tournament last week – the final school netball tournament for some of our students too. Despite coming up against some tough opposition and losing their fixtures, the team had a great time away, with the highlights ending up being the shopping and the op-shop fashion show!

Half Marathon
Senior PE classes have been doing a standard based on fitness and it culminated in them entering to run 21km (half marathon) which they did on Sunday. Some tired bodies but a great sense of achievement by the small group who took part!

Hockey
Our Kaikoura High Hockey team are in their first final this week of the Marlborough Hockey competition that they have been travelling to Blenheim to play in each Thursday night. We wish them well and fingers crossed!
