A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Who can believe another big term is over and done with already – the year is racing away! There are many changes for education still coming and although the date for the Teachers Only day that the Ministry has mandated we take is below, we are unsure in light of recent news whether it will actually be occurring. We will let you know as soon as we know! Congratulations to our students for getting through the long term which is the ‘work’ term. But there is no less ‘busyness in’ Term 4. Our seniors have 12 days left of school before NCEA exams start, Middle school will start looking at their option selections and will spend the term gathering skills that will help them in the senior school, and the junior school have fun days to look forward to. Although there is a tendency for many students to see term 4 as a ‘nothing’ term there is still a lot of learning and experiences to be had, as Dr Suess said “The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” It annoys me so much to hear students telling me that “school sucks” or “it’s so boring” when they will not make an effort themselves but expect education to be ‘done’ to them. It takes a partnership where the student makes an effort and engages with what is put in front of them. I often wish we could whisk them off to countries where young people have to fight for the opportunity to even be able to go to school so they could see how fortunate they are in having ready access to education, and how they need to play a part in the education they are receiving. I trust lots of learning will occur over the break in all those different contexts and everyone will come back revitalized for the end of year – and some sunshine!

GRADUATE PROFILE
This is a set of skills and ideals that a student who spends 7 years at Kaikoura High School will ideally have when they leave. We have got to this point in consultation with students and staff and now would like whanau feedback. The graduate profile is below and in early term 4 we will send some specific questions about it.

STRATEGIC PLAN
Feedback to the community: a short report on the strategic plan to date and whether we are still focussed on areas of importance will also come out in week 1 of next term.
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?
Sport Coaching Workshop
On Thursday we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to have a Student Coaching Workshop at our kura. This was run by Emma from Sport Tasman and Leigh Gibbs from NZ Netball. This was offered to our kura as the Kaikoura area is unique and we often lack resourcing such as coaches for different codes.
The idea was to upskill students interested in the coaching and leadership space to be given the opportunity to do so. The aim was for our younger population to receive quality coaching experience from their mentors and at the same time the student coaches to gain some valuable skills. The focus was generic coaching delivery with the aim for Sport Tasman to help facilitate relationships between students and the codes post the workshop to enable the continuation of coaching development and also fill valuable resources. The day and experience were well received by those who participated and we are hopeful that we can make this an annual event.

Game On
On the 20th of September, we had a Game On – Sports Festival run by Sport Tasman at our kura. The festival consisted of touch rugby, netball, cricket, ki-o-rahi, basketball and hockey. This brought together experts from the Marlborough region in their codes to pass on specialist knowledge to our tauira. They ran two sessions, one for the primary schools and one for the high school students. Our kura was a hive of activity and it was so cool to see so many engaged in different sports.
Day in the Snow
Thanks to Matua Doug a great day was planned and then held at Mt Hutt for our Year 7-10 keen skiers and snowboarders. A near-perfect day was in store after the long drive and the smiles say it all. Some very tired bodies the next day!

Art
Year 7 did an amazing job in art class this term! Their “Real Me” portraits truly captured their personalities, and they had a lot of fun exploring the POP Art unit. They also worked with clay and created some awesome pinch pots that are just waiting to be fired. Year 10 wrapped up the term by learning dry point etching. They produced some impressive prints on paper and experimented with printing on fabric, creating beautiful bags.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Marathon Fundraiser
Our major fundraiser is fast approaching and we need people to assist on the course as marshalls, cheer squads or enter a team/individual to take part. The funds raised go towards subsidising students’ events so we can offer a wide range of activities. If you know of any business that wants to donate a spot prize that would be welcomed as well!
