A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Swimming sports was a great day and it was awesome to have the whole school involved. Some absolute standouts over the day seeing some students (who want to be anonymous!) getting involved in virtually everything. It was a great balance of competitive and fun events that catered for everyone and not being the best swimmer was not a problem. It also seemed far more teachers ended up in the pool than I have ever seen – I guess most were not by choice, however! Looking forward to a great athletics day next Wednesday – please feel free to come and support us, have a picnic lunch and be prepared to run in the parent relay team! Overall it’s been a great start to the year and I’m enjoying meeting our new students, as well as seeing the returners settling into work. The two areas we have asked students to work on at Assembly are their time management – and working out when to move to class without the aid of phone or bells and making sure we are managing the space around us by not leaving litter behind when we move on from a space at lunchtime.

Hope to see you all next week on Wednesday or at the goal-setting meetings (more info below). This replaces our Academic Review Day and is, we think, a more meaningful conversation to have at this stage of the year.

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?

Swimming Sports
Tuesday saw the return of the whole school swimming sports event for our kura, which was so exciting!

The day ran really well and it was great to see so many participating again.

We saw some fantastic efforts from our more competitive swimmers and some great turnouts for our fun events such as the manu comp, snake race and kickboard races.

A rumour was going around the students that the house that managed to push Mr Lawrie in the pool first would be awarded 1000 points, so there was much plotting on the poolside. After numerous attempts, 5 brave young men tackled Mr Lawrie, sacrificing themselves. Mr Wood and Mr Larkin were also collateral!

Next up is CCHS Swimming, of which our most competitive swimmers will be selected to represent the school.

THANK YOU to Kaikōura Aquatic Centre for your support!

Pottery and Art

Mrs Ruiz’s art class on a trip to see local pottery and stone carving in action with Sam Genet.

A Reminder of the Cellphone Rules

Cell phones must not be used during school hours (8.40 am-3.00 pm) Students are welcome to drop off their phones at the school office, where they will be secured for the day.

If a student breaches this rule, the cell phone will be impounded by the teacher or support staff. The teacher/support staff will bring the cell phone to the office where it will be logged and kept for safekeeping. If a student is compliant with this process the phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day. However, if a student is not compliant or has two or more infractions then the cell phone will only be returned to a parent.

PLEASE NOTE – it is NOT school rules that a phone can be in the bag – the rule is no phones at school.

ATHLETICS DAY – 21ST FEBRUARY

Bring the whānau & a picnic and come down to Athletics Day next week! Expect an epic day of house competition, school record-breaking and much fun! Bring your running shoes in case your child signs you up for the parent relay!

Students entered events during the first week of school and will be reminded next week of their events. Age groups are defined as the student’s age on 1st January 2024.(ie if they are 12yrs and 4 days on 1st Jan, they will be U14).

The day will kick off at 08.45 am with the 1500m, right through until 3 pm (Relays). The full schedule has been emailed separately and will be on Facebook.

Bring cash for the BBQ and Juicies ($2 sausage, $1 juicies) and cameras to capture those close finishes!

Students must bring sportswear (in their house colours!) appropriate footwear, food & drink, clothing for weather changes, a hat, and LOTS of sunscreen) and their best efforts!
