A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
It has been great to see so many at Goal Setting Day and I hope people have had a good chance to meet teachers and make some sound plans for the year. Athletics was a blast last week and almost the perfect day with a little bit of a breeze to cool the hard-working competitors down. It’s been a great couple of weeks with different events going on – the Air Force band was amazing (and so was little Miss Fiss’ dinosaur dancing!!!). Our swimmers at CCHS achieved outstanding results and they all gave their all to competing. It’s great to see students giving things a go and getting involved – exactly as we challenged them to at the start of the year.
I would like to make a reminder about our value respect – we are fortunate to get outside visitors coming to Kaikoura a lot (who wouldn’t want to!!!) but it is disappointing when our students forget to be respectful in listening to the visitors, taking hats off inside and paying attention. A little bit of respect goes a long way and so often we get amazing compliments on how our students behave when we travel – it would be great to see our students showing the same level of respect to visitors to us!
The term is flying by – a wee reminder that Easter we are closed Friday, Monday and Tuesday (not our choice it’s a Ministry thing!) so plan for a decent break!

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?
Athletics Day
Last week we FINALLY managed to host our Athletics Day, after really, really bad luck last year!
As usual, it was an awesome day for the students. The track hosted some fantastic athleticism and competition, proving a popular spot to spectate as it has done for years prior.
The field events were a great place to hang out and watch participants in the shade. Many of our students were so close to breaking some records this year, so hopefully a bit of practice for our place-getters ahead of the CCHS Athletics Meet on the 13th of March will fine-tune those skills!
The staff were pretty stoked to win the relay this year!
We would like to remind all whānau for Cross Country in Term 2, that the whole school sports days are not optional to attend. We encourage participation but expect the full support of your peers who are taking part in the events.

LEARNING FIRST AID
This week we had Nikki from St John’s come in and teach our 9/10 health students some key life-saving skills. This was an hour session solely focusing on what to do in an emergency where someone is not responding, CPR and using a defibrillator. We had some experts in the class who did the two-minute compressions task; Sonny Lyons 100%, Jack Taylor & Abe Pattison 99% and Mila Carson & Baylee Ford 93%!

YEAR 7/8 HOCKEY
For the first time ever, Kaikōura High School has entered two teams into the Hockey Marlborough summer league competition for Year 7/8, with some players across the road at St Joseph’s joining us. The competition kicked off this week with Kaikōura Blue and Kaikōura Yellow both securing wins!
We look forward to seeing their progress over the next 5 weeks!
The players are being coached by Head Girl, Grace Pettit (Hiratū) and supported by our Nurse Amy this year.
NZ AIR FORCE BAND
It was an absolute treat to host the NZAF band this week, and it wasn’t your average show either! The MC took our tauira through all the sections and instruments of the band (the oboe was a favourite) and we were treated to an epic drum line, an orchestra playing “tūtira mai ngā iwi” and some classic movie scores from Star Wars, The Incredibles, Toy Story, Superman and Jaws.
The kids completely got amongst it -grooving, cheering, singing and witnessing various staff members being chased around the gym by a dinosaur… what!?

COMMUNITY NOTICES
The year 7/8 department has a fun day planned for the 14th of March. Students will need full PE gear and a packed lunch with a full water bottle on the day. More details to come out this week.
